Decluttering can help create a more organized and stress-free living space or even just make it easier when it comes time to move.
With my recent move I spent a few months slowly decluttering and downsizing my belongings to make the final step of selling what wasn’t coming and packing what was easier and I thought I would share some of the tips that helped me as an ADHD solo mum of two declutter my house after holding on and hoarding a lot of belongings from throughout the years.
1. Start small
Choose a small area to start, like a drawer or a shelf, to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Work for a set amount of time, such as 15 or 30 minutes, to maintain focus and avoid burnout.
2. Sort items
Label four boxes as "Keep," "Donate," "Sell," and "Trash." Sort all the items into these categories as you go, this also keeps things clean when you do decide to stop for the day. Remember to handle each item.
3. Evaluate necessity
Ask yourself questions like:
- Do I use this regularly?
- Does it bring me joy or have a set purpose (things like tape measure etc) ?
- Do I have multiples of this item?
- Is it worth the space it occupies?
4. Organise as you go
Group similar items together to make them easier to find and access. Use bins, baskets, and drawer organizers to keep items tidy.
5. Use the one-year rule
Clothing: If you haven’t worn it in a year, consider donating or selling it.
Other items: If an item hasn’t been used in a year and doesn’t have sentimental value, it might be time to let it go.
6. Digitise when possible
Scan and store important documents digitally to reduce paper clutter. Digitise photos and store them online or on a hard drive. If you prefer to keep to keep the paperwork and photos in person considering getting photo albums so photos aren’t loose and a folder to store the paperwork in.
7. Create a decluttering schedule
Schedule regular decluttering sessions (monthly or seasonally) to prevent clutter from building up over time. Align decluttering with seasons, like spring cleaning or back-to-school organizing.
8. Limit new items
For every new item you bring into your home, remove one. Avoid impulse buys and only purchase items that you truly need or love.
9. Donate and sell items
Identify local charities and donation centers for items in good condition you can also look into if you have a buy nothing page on Facebook for your area. You can use online marketplaces like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or local consignment shops to sell items that are no longer needed.
10. Sentimental items
Choose a few meaningful items to keep and let go of the rest. Take pictures of sentimental items you don’t need to keep physically.
11. Get support
Work with a friend or family member to stay motivated. Consider hiring a professional organizer if you need additional assistance.
12. Reward yourself
Treat yourself after completing a decluttering session to stay motivated. Take time to appreciate the newly organized space and the mental clarity it brings.
By following these tips, you can tackle the decluttering process in a manageable and effective way, leading to a more organized and peaceful living environment or in my case an easier move.
